Can anyone just take their own listing when selling their house instead of paying commission fees to an agent/real-estate broker (US)?

You cannot “take your own listing” per se, as that is the job of a duly licensed real estate agent or broker. However, you can offer your property “For Sale By Owner” and sell it yourself. You’ll save yourself a few percentage points of the selling price, but you’ll also cost yourself money too. It’s just that you won’t know how much you cost yourself, and whether it was more, or less, than you would have paid to have an agent sell it for you. And, if you make any significant mistakes, you’ll cost yourself way more than that in legal fees and/or liability cleaning up the mess you created. But yes, in the U.S., you are perfectly free to sell your own real estate at your own risk.
